Sri Lanka Export Development Board launched the Sri Lanka Expo Web site on 13th July 2011 in order to facilitate viewers to obtain the information on the Sri Lanka Expo 2012.The web address of the Sri Lanka Expo 2012 is and will be a one stop site for business visitors and exhibitors.


Sri Lanka Export Development Board, the apex state institution for promotion and development of exports realizing the need for accelerated growth of export trade in parallel with other development activities has taken necessary measures to launch several initiatives to reach the targets set by the government. The major strategies to be adopted by EDB are spelt out in it’s strategic plan for the year 2011-2015 , which sets an overall target of US$ 15 Billion of export earnings by 2015.

There is no doubt that the export trade has made an invaluable contribution to the social and economic development of the nation . The national policy document “Mahinda Chinthana - Vision for the future” emphasizes the pivotal role played by the export sector as an essential ingredient to the development of export trade of the country.

The performance of exports in year 2010 was encouraging as the year end statistics reveal a remarkable improvement compared to 2009. The total exports from Sri Lanka in 2009 and 2010 were US$ 7.1 Billion and US$ 8.17 Billion respectively, with an overall increase of 17.26%.

As a strategic intervention, EDB is organizing the Sri Lanka Expo Exhibition, to further stimulate global business activities and provide greater opportunities for Sri Lanka Exporters to achieve this end.

Sri Lanka Expo 2012

Sri Lanka Expo 2012 is scheduled to be held from 28th to 30th March 2012 at the Sirimavo Bandaranayke Memorial Exhibition Centre of BMICH , under the theme “Partnering with the Hub of Asia”.

The business community in Sri Lanka is highly impressed on the appropriate steps taken by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board to re-launch the Expo exhibition after nearly 15 years.

Sri Lanka Export Development Board will organize this national event with support of public and private sector institutions. The stakeholders of the event are Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Ministry of External Affairs, Department of Commerce, Board of Investment, Department of Export Agriculture, Tourism Promotion Bureau, Sri Lanka Tea Board, National Gems and Jewellery Authority and National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka.

The Objectives

The main objectives of hosting the Sri Lanka Expo 2012 is to promote Sri Lanka’s trade, investment and tourism; to re-position Sri Lanka as a lucrative business, investment and tourism destination in Asia and to instill buyer confidence in Sri Lanka’s quality products and services all of which will facilitate the business community to achieve the national target of 15 Billion exports by year 2015.

The Event

Sri Lanka Expo 2012 will provide opportunities to display and promote quality export products on a single platform and over 300 Sri Lankan exporters will participate covering the entire product range of traditional and non traditional products and services. The organizers expect over 1000 overseas buyers from strategic markets.

In addition to the exhibition there will be opportunities for the business community to participate in networking events to expands their business activities. Technical Sessions on the themes related to creating awareness on the conducive investment climate and Sri Lanka‘s potential in the tourism sector will be organized with the participation of globally recognized business leaders as key note speakers.


Sri Lanka’s experience on Expo Exhibitions goes back to early 90’s. Sri Lanka Expo ’92, the first ever International Trade Fair in Sri Lanka was held in November 1992 at the BMICH with the participation of 375 Sri Lankan companies. The second Sri Lanka Expo was held in October 1994. Sri Lanka Expo’ 94 had approximately 315 stalls with participation of over 350 exhibitors. Sri Lanka Expo ’97, the country’s third international style export fair was held in October 1997 at the BMICH. Over three hundred companies exhibited wide range of products. Over one thousand buyers and investors visited each Expo exhibition held in Sri Lanka.


There will be nearly 350 stalls representing more than 300 leading companies in exports representing Apparel, Tea, Rubber, Footwear and Leather products, ICT/BPO/KPO, Gem & Jewellery, Food and Beverages, Spices and Allied products, Coconut and Coir based products, Confectionary and Bakery products, Fish and Fishery products, Fruits and Vegetables, Boat building, Ceramic and other Mineral products, Giftware and Lifestyle products, Handloom, Wooden products, Spa and Herbal products, Ornamental fish and Floriculture and Plastic, paints and allied products, Electric and electronic products, Ship repairing and ship building, and services sectors.

UAE-Sri Lanka trade tops $ 1 b mark in 2011

DUBAI: The value of trade between the UAE and Sri Lanka has increased from $720 million to $1.1 billion in 2011, officials said. M. M Abdul Raheem, Consul General of Sri Lanka in Dubai, said that Sri Lanka’s total export to the world has increased its values from $7,122 million in 2009 to $10,017 million in 2011, while the export to Middle East region witnessed a significant increase worth $980 million from $749 million during the same period.
