Clazedonia SpA, Italy

Topic: Sri Lanka’s investment climate‐ impressions of a leading International investor

After obtaining High school diploma from Liceo ‘Galileo Galilei’, Verona in 1978 and Degree cum laude in Economics and Business from Verona University in 1983, in 1984, Sandro Veronesi Began working at Golden Lady S.p.A., an Italian company that is a worldwide leader in the production of tights.

In 1987, he founded Calzedonia S.p.A., while maintaining a key role in the international development of Golden Lady.

Since 1993, he has been exclusively dedicated to Calzedonia.

In 1996, the Calzedonia Group launched the underwear/lingerie brand Intimissimi.

In 2003, the Tezenis brand was created, a chain of self-service underwear stores for the whole family.

In 2009, the Calzedonia Group acquired the majority share in Falconeri, an Italian brand with a strong tradition in the production of knitwear and cashmere goods for men and women.

In recent years, Mr. Veronesi has concentrated on the growth of Calzedonia, both with respect to stores—creating a chain of about 3,000 sales outlets in 31 countries—as well as production; the Group has production plants both in Italy and abroad (primarily in Eastern Europe and Sri Lanka)

The Calzedonia Group ended 2010 with a consolidated turnover of 1 billion 128 million Euro and approximately 20,000 employees, more than 2,200 of which are in Italy.

Twenty years ago, the first business had a turnover of 250 million Lira.

This development was possible by focussing all efforts on the objective of producing and selling excellent quality products at the right price.

In 1999, Mr. Veronesi established the Fondazione San Zeno, a foundation allocating part of Calzedonia's receipts to help those in need, giving them the possibility of improving their living conditions in the long-term by means of education, training and work, operating both in Italy and abroad, and holding true to the motto: 'EDUCATION, TRAINING, WORK'.

In 2009, Mr. Veronesi was awarded the title of “Cavaliere del Lavoro” for his entrepreneurial excellence during a ceremony that took place before the President of the Republic at the Quirinale.
